"What is striking in the Symphonies 97 en 98 are the beautiful slow movements: Haydn again shows us that he is the master of our feelings. The menuets are catchingly dansant, the trios are refreshing. The first movements of these symphonies start with - as often is the case with Haydn- with a short, slow introduction and directly after that they burst into a fast tempo full of joyfulness and inventiveness. He makes simple themes develop into masterworks in an unsurpassed way. The closing movements, fast in character and starting off with only the strings, are astonishing because of their vitality and structure. Haydn is at his best in the 12 London Symphonies." - Ton Koopman in the linernotes

Symphonies 97 en 98 are the last of the first set of Haydn's London Symphonies, but still this cd is called vol.1, because the ABO is planning to record all the twelve symphonies, on authentic instrumentation.

Quotes
  • 'Key juxtapositions and tempo changes between tracks make perfect sense and the playing, recording and documentation are first rate. Koopman has done Buxtehude proud'. - Malcolm Riley – Editor's Choice in Gramophone (september 2009) for Opera Omnia X- Organ Works, Vol.5 (CC72249)
  •  ‘….with superb control of style and technique.’, jury BBC Music Awards, which Koopman won in 2008
  • "Ton Koopman kneads the notes with confident hands. And what symbolics hide in the sudden harpsichord arpeggio's that Haydn makes Koopman play at the end of the 98th symphony. A purified artist waves here: Hi guys! I am still here!" Guido Van Oorschot, De Volkskrant, 15 juli 2010
"This recording of Baroque Symphonien No. 97 en 98 fits seamlessly into the ranks of the now almost countless recordings with historical complex instuments, and is clearly one of the better productions." Pizzicato 2010

"We look forward to Koopmans series with confidence, but honestly, there could easily fit three  symphonies on one CD instead of two." Paul Herruer Luister May 2010
